Creature families
1,000 years later
Rapid evolution
The creatures of Wakfu are for the most part the same as in DOFUS, but through 1,000 of terrible floods, they have had to adapt and evolve... and sometimes for the worse! So lets go through some creatures of several kinds and then on to creature families which are based on evolutionary relationships between members.
Creature ecosystems
We wanted the fauna of Wakfu's islands to be autonomous and to get rid of the notion of "areas of reappearance" where players can expect creatures to reappear as if by magic.
All the creatures you'll meet in Wakfu are the result of reproduction... although some creatures can recreate without a mate. If players do not keep an eye on their populations, some species could even become extinct.
Creature families are either sexual or asexual.
Mating Families
Type 1 - The young
These individuals form the basis of the species... they are the babies and they cannot reproduce.
Depending on which species they belong to, these young will either become mating or non-mating adult males or adult females.
The Lilpiwi, for example will give rise to a Piwi and the Lilpiwette will grow into a Piwette. As for the Gobballs, the Gobbly will grow into a Gobball or a Gobblette.

Type 2 - The adults
These are the beasts which reproduce. All families have at least one male and one female. In general the males are more numerous than the females.
Males may only reproduce once.
As for female Piwis, you have the Piwettes on the female side and the Green Piwi, the Red Piwi, the Yellow Piwi, the Blue Piwi and finally the Purple Piwi on the male side!

Type 3 - Little Chiefs

When an adult gains a certain amount of prestige, the individual may evolve into a "Little Chief". These creatures will not necessarily reproduce.
Piwis who successfully harass the players will advance to become Strongbeaks.
Type 4 - Family chiefs

These individuals are invested with supreme authority. Such is their level of responsibility that they do not even have time to make babies!
The Monarch Piwi is the chief of the Piwi family.
Type 5 « special » - Mob extra

These creatures will only appear when several conditions exist at once. Usually, the creature will be male and mating. Players can influence the appearance of "mob extras".
The appearance of the Super Piwi (from the Piwi family) for example is linked to the number of Piwettes as well as the number of Piwis in the area.
Mutant mob extra Tofus can appear in polluted areas and since the individual will be able to reproduce, more and more adult mutant Tofus will appear if they are not eliminated from the polluted zone.
Type 6 « special » - Living-dead

Creatures of certain families can come back to life... while all the time staying dead! As you can imagine, these beasts are putrid creations! The good news is that they cannot reproduce and their limp personalities make poor leaders out of them.
Living dead Piwis are called Zombiwis and the Gobball equivalent is the Horigobball Don't worry, you'll smell them coming!
Type 7 « special » - Corrupted

When we talk about corruption, we inevitably mean those little Polters that pull the strings from their dark hiding places. Most creature families have the capacity to "Polterize" themselves and to recruit this strange misfit of a creature into their ranks. The presence of a Polter in the area will leave you in no doubt that someone's been doing some corrupting nearby!
Wooo the pretty little Piwi goes bump in the night... it's a Polterpiwi!!!
Type 8 « special » - Divine

It might be a minor deity, but all the same, you wouldn't mind having one of these beasts for a cousin - and all families have one! Being divine creatures, they often have better things to do than join their mortal cousins on the battleground.
All the important families (read: families with at least one brain cell per household) have one of these things, but not all are on the same level. Certain conditions must exist among family members of an entire region in order for these divine creatures to appear.
Look at that underbelly, that elegance... ah yes, don't blink till it flutters off, it's the Divine Piwi!
Non-mating Families
These families are identical to the families described above except for the fact that there are no male and female members. Any two adult individuals can repopulate an area whereas with mating families, at least one male and one female is required.
Hierarchic relationships
Position according to hierarchic rank
All the above creatures are interconnected within a hierarchic family structure. Each type of creature is therefore in a different hierarchic rank and even an adult male and an adult female of the same type will differ in position.
At the bottom you'll find the youngsters and at the very top, the Divine creatures. "Mob extras" vary in position. Living dead and corrupted creatures do not have any hierarchic rank.
Relationships within groups
These relationships decide the dynamics of each group.
First of all, the higher the level of mating of a creature and the higher its rank, the quicker it will mate with an available female. This means that creatures who are higher up in the family hierarchy will reproduce at a higher rate or will give rise to the appearance of special creatures. For example, in certain cases, one female and one Little Chief will produce one extra mob.
Secondly creatures can give orders to one another when in combat. The higher the rank of a creature, the higher its chance of being followed by creatures of lower rank.
In Dungeons
Lastly, creature ecosystems will behave totally differently in dungeons. Populations, their appearance and their distribution will be scripted. This will lead to a totally different gaming experience with each new dungeon you enter.
